We planted out our first patch in April when I was home on maternity leave, and now have a small, but ongoing supply of Kale and Silverbeet, Celery, Broccoli & Cauliflower. We also have an abundance of Parsley, which I plan to use for a big batch of pesto.
Our second veggie patch, in the sunniest part of the garden, has been divided into 30cm squares - following the square foot gardening guide - and planted out with Beans, Peas, Cucumber, Tomato, Capsicum, Radish, Rocket, Pak Choi & some more Celery.
Surrounding the veggie patches I have planted cornflowers, marigold, sunflowers and comfrey to encourage bees & insects into the garden, and to ward off any unwanted pests.
Being a total novice gardener, my go-to for gardening advice is my very knowledgable mum, the Pod Gardening website, and Mel Bartholomew's book, Square Foot Gardening.
Although we don't have the garden space to go completely self sufficient I am determined to grow as much as I can, to feed my small family with homegrown organic food.
